Minneapolis, MN Saturday June 16th 2016

The show is sponsored by the Marines tonight -
Wow - U of Minnesota has a female band director - the first one in the Big Ten - way to go!!!!

Genesis, River City, Colt Cadets, Govenaires, Pioneer, Pacific Crest, Mandarin, Oregon Crusaders, The Academy, Colts, Troopers, Blue Stars, Cavaliers, Madison, Phantom, Blue Knights, Santa Clara, and Blue Devils

Genesis - Austin, TX- Hell Have no Furry - Form problems in front  arc right of the top - Nice saber toss before vocal came in and switch to rifle - nice drum break!!!  Individual stuff - but nice!  Curvilinear forms seem to be causing trouble with individuals - some of that is spacing related - Nice back field look with corps spread - Really like their mash of songs - goes well with the show theme- The end was a bit messy - but the progress is wonderful - Really held my attention and was interesting from start to finish - Well done Genesis!!!  Place:  1     Score:  60.275

River City Rhythm - Anoka, MN - I actually applied for a job with this corps as their media person.  I did not figure I would get it - but hey - why not!  First I've seen them and I understand if they score a 45. tonight they beat their high score from last season!  Shimmer is their show - Their color guard certainly shimmers!  Pretty pink flags - Nice catch face by one of the rifles - LOL  - Flags at the end were in need of some serious work - in fact the ending was a bit of mess - but it was great to see them for the first time and they will only get better!    Place:  2    Score:  52.80

Colt Cadets - Dubuque, IA - And some are skipping onto the field - oh my - I like their uniforms - I think this is the first I have seen them as well - Journey Within is their show - A nice little show from the Colt Cadets - seemed just the right fit for a cadet corps - not so dark - and kind of fun.  Nicely done Colt Cadets   Place:  3   Score:  50.50

Govenaires - St. Peter, MN - I believe this is an all age corps - Sherlock is their show title - Like the costumes of the guard - fits the theme well - Color guard of 18 - 27 horns - 16 field percussion - 11 in front ensemble - 3 dead on the field - ok well not dead exactly :-)    Cute show for a small all age corps. Score:  64.85

Pioneer -  Milwaukee, WI  - Saint Joan of Arc - They really need to get shakos - these hats make them look short and squat - Color guard uni's are nice - She is just way too loud compared to the corps - where is the balance?  There were several big glaring errors with the color guard in the opening - Whew the color guard is not having a good night - not sure if it is the wind or - I get it - but when you have trouble spinning a flag with two hands - why go to one hand - just not good - work is really sloppy - well she just burned at the stake - They look better without hats I think the corps is much better and most of the movement is much crisper - The end is still a bit - odd - She's dead don't bring her back - Well it was better than before - for sure, but ...   Place:  13     Score:  59.45

Pacific Crest - Diamond Bar, CA - The  Union - I think this is the railroad show - nice opening sound - I like the hammers that the guard spins - and they are good with them now too - nice improvement since last time - nice end to Fix You - The resolution of the drum solo was nice - and the minimal sounds in the back were nice - movement into blocks was not so good - Metheny introduction was nice - Wow - much improved from what they had been I hope they do well tonight -   Place :  12  Score:  64.575

Mandarins - Sacramento, CA - Forbidden Forrest - opening flags are really pretty - nice flag feature into equipment change before the sabers entered - Nice resolution to ballad - nice rifle moment - really like the green flags in the closer - I feel like they need more work on the end - but way better than last time I saw them - the color guard has really begun to shine.  Well done Mandarins Place:  10   Score:   65.825

Oregon Crusaders - Portland, OR - It's the tree people - Right the show is Hunted - last song Death Hunt form on Dangerous Ground- an old Phantom number -  The singing in the beginning is so beautiful - Form maintenance at the end of the opening section was not too pretty - I guess when you title something "Hunted" it opens the door to all interpretations - I have to stop being so literal and just look at the elements of "Hunted."  So the girl that was caught in a net - now has a whip and is chasing the guy who put the net on her?  Wish I could say I liked it more this time but I actually thought it was worse - that makes me sad - Place:  11  Score:  65.425

The Academy - Tempe, AZ - Drum Corpse Bride - Soloist in Unchained Melody was goose bump material!  Full corps sound in Unchained Melody just gorgeous !!  WOW!!!!  Has this show come a long way since I last saw it - I am so glad they have some humor in it - Mary Poppins was such a fun show to watch last year - I suspect this will do better tonight than it has - at least I hope so -  Place:   7  Score: 71.35

The Colts - Dubuque, IA -  Nachtmusik -    Well someone's mom is holding up a big old sign for her kid or for the corps LOL - I can see that the boxes have something in them - but it is too light to tell what it is - which is a huge bummer - Whew - that last flag section was rough and not just because of the wind - which I believe is really hampering them a bit (them as in all the corps)  Oh my Silent Night - They dabble with the Mannheim Steamroller's version - but I wish they would try to do that sound effect MS uses at the end of Silent night - Like Knight's in White Satin was really nice!  They need to be cleaner with their forms - liked the flash of black at the end - Their last drill sets are always so cool -  Really like this show -   Place: 9    Score:  68.50

The Troopers - Casper, WY - Heroes -    I really like this opening - YES!!  They got rid of the Yellow Ribbon sooner - makes things look much better - YAY!!!   Come on Troop - watch your distances!!!! Honestly the flag work before the AIDS section - looks really messy because the guard is spread all over the field and in the corps and it just looks like everyone is confused - The ending of the AIDS section made more sense tonight than it has - Still think that is the weak section of the show - I think they have an idea now of what the statement they want to make - it just needs to be clearer.  Firemen section is good - Like the breathing before Fix You - I already have goose bumps - soloists are so good - Fix You is so beautiful - People are blowing through forms and the arc is still a bit of a mess - but man that push - Better arc at the end - so glad the drum major took off his hat off at the end -  Troopers I'll tell you - the show is good - I liked last year but this one seems to be connecting with the students and the audience -  I hope you keep getting better and better - Place:  8     Score:  69.475

Blue Stars - LaCrosse, WI -  I missed the title of the show - which sounded French -  Violins in drum corps seems to be a big thing -  Le Reve -  or the Dream - Love the prism pieces on the hats and uni's - OK - I still don't get it completely - I like the music a lot - but there is so much "stuff" on the field and so many costume changes and equipment changes - and I know they are doing this to tell the story - and maybe I am just making too much out of what the show is about - and again - maybe it is just about a girl having a dream - or perhaps a nightmare - At any rate - It was more enjoyable than the last time I saw it and loved the computer added vocals - really nice touch and helped with the "French" connection.  Place: 4      Score:  75.5

The Cavaliers - Rosemont, IL - Propaganda - Let's go guys!!!  I really like these uniforms too - love the rifle work in the drum solo - Goose bumps at the singing - I get so involved in this show that I forget - I could hear the vocal track better tonight than ever - I like that they are using current "Propaganda" in the show and not just cold war stuff.  The guard dropped - I think more than usual - but holy cow what a moving show - and the work those guys do - freakin' amazing.   Place: 2     Score:  79.975

Madison Scouts - Madison, WI - Judas - Guard looks really good tonight - really impressive - The saber line just jumped and landed on their knees - cool move - but wait until they get older and the knee problems they are going to have.  It's a good show - and the color guard is better than I've seen it in awhile or at least I think they were good.  I feel like the show is a tad recycled - though I know it is from a different perspective and handled well - I thought Judas was a bit late getting in position for the hanging - now it appeared he did it as he was supposed to - but I just thought it seemed late to me.  I have to admit I am surprised they a scoring so low - I wonder why.   Place:  6    Score:  74.05

Phantom Regiment - Rockford/Loves-Park, IL - Voice of Promise - Wow that wall of sound! - Nice saber toss at end of opener - you go Phantomettes - Wow - ballad is just lush - The color guard file looked like the Phantom of old color guard - OK - Holy Shit - what a sound - their music just mesmerized me for sure - my gosh that was just beautiful from start to finish - and what the corps does while playing - and the color guard - one of the best I have seen from them - Kudos to Phantom!  Place:  3    Score:   76.575

Blue Knights - Denver, CO - The Great Event - These guys really sparkle - They have added a field cover since the Denver show - I like the new opening way more - There sound is not working tonight - now it is ok - YAY!!!  I get it tonight!!!   I just feel like weird shit happened to them tonight - maybe that is because in many ways it looked like a very changed show - Moonlight Sonata is my very favorite part - it is so dark - I loved the way the show goes backwards to before the world fell into its current state -  Like I said the show makes so much more sense now and was much better in many ways.  Place: 5       Score:   75.05

Santa Clara Vanguard - Santa Clara, CA - Force of Nature - Lightening bolt rifles are cool - but spent sometime on the ground tonight - Earth Song is beautiful - What a beautiful show - Rifle line was not so good tonight - but everything else was - not sure what the problem was with the lightening bolts - though they just called for a delay because lightening is close by so maybe?????  LOL  They should break an 80.  tonight.     Place:  1    Score:   81.75

I've seen it quite a bit on the group discount advert.  - I love the purple and lavender costumes that Phantom is wearing in that advert.  So beautiful against the white of the uniform and the green of the field.  Just sayin'

Well crap - the show has been cancelled because of the threat of continued bad weather - So no Blue Devils tonight :-(  seriously a major bummer - really wanted to see them again - You could hear them playing their show in the tunnel -

These shows are just so entertaining - and working at a minimal level in this activity and knowing the work that goes into that - man - I say it after every show about how much work these students do day in and day out over the summer!

And so ends another live stream - Thanks DCI for making this available -
